Police probe Benoni mass murder

Tuesday, March 7, 2017

Pretoria - Police are investigating the mass murder of 14 people in Benoni.

Following a tip-off from a member of the community, police discovered six bodies with apparent gunshot wounds near a railway line on Sunday.

On Monday, eight more bodies were discovered in the same area, bringing the total number of victims to 14.

The bodies, which not yet been identified, are believed to be illegal miners.

Acting National Commissioner Lieutenant General Khomotso Phahlane has condemned the killings but also discouraged citizens from speculating on a motive.

He said they should rather wait for the investigation to advance and the victims to be identified.

Phahlane said Gauteng Commissioner Lieutenant General Deliwe de Lange and her management team are overseeing the investigation.

“Communities can be assured that the South African Police Service remains committed to further reducing the levels of serious crime and we are presently focusing on refining our crime prevention and combating operational plans,” said the Acting National Commissioner. - SAnews.gov.za
