The Gauteng Department of Education has confirmed that two learners have died in an accident while traveling to school on Wednesday.

The department has expressed shock and sadness over the incident, which occurred at Fifth and Sixth Street in Cloverdene in Benoni. The two learners died on the scene.

“One learner was in Grade 9 at Petit High School, whilst the other learner in Grade 4 at Spark Primary School.  It is believed the driver of the Toyota Venture collided into a car before rolling several times. Approximately 14 learners were travelling in the private transport,” said the department.

Eleven learners and the driver have been hospitalized. The department said it is providing the necessary support and counselling to the family, affected educators and the learners. - SAnews.gov.za
