NYDA to honour top youngsters

Thursday, March 7, 2013

Pretoria - The National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) says it is all systems go for this year’s South African Youth Awards.

The agency announced on Thursday that it has opened the nomination period for the 2nd Annual South African Youth Awards to run from 07 March to 12 April 2013.

The awards showcase the exceptional work and contribution of young South Africans between the ages of 14 to 35 years and also serve to challenge and encourage the public sector, private sector and civil society to make tangible contributions to youth development.

“As a result of the enormity of the youth unemployment challenge, youth development cannot be the responsibility of a single entity; everyone has a role to play,” NYDA chief executive Steven Ngubeni said.

He said by acknowledging public and private sector organisations that initiate youth development initiatives, the NYDA hoped this would encourage other public and private sector organisations to do the same.

Ngubeni said this year’s theme was: "A Leader Without a Title”.

“We would like to honour young people who have shown leadership in their communities and their chosen fields. We are looking for young people who are not necessarily in the limelight and who lead from the back.”

The awards ceremony will be held on 29 June.

The winner for each category will receive R50 000. The overall winner, chosen from the category winners, will receive the Presidential Award and R100 000 prize money.

Nomination forms can be accessed via the South African Youth Awards website at www.nyda.gov.za/sayouthawards2013 and NYDA branches across the country.
