The National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) will on Monday officially launch Youth Month at the Hector Pieterson Memorial Museum in Soweto, Johannesburg.
In line with government’s programme to celebrate the centenary year of Tata Nelson Mandela and Mama Albertina Sisulu, Youth Month 2018 will be commemorated under the theme ‘Live the Legacy: Towards A Socio-Economically Empowered Youth’.
The event will be attended by Minister in the Presidency for Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation and chairperson of the National Planning Commission (NPC), Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, who will deliver the keynote address.
During the launch, a month-long programme of activities aimed at addressing youth unemployment will be unveiled.
“At the centre of celebrations will be preserving the legacy of our struggle heroes and heroines and showcasing beneficiaries of the NYDA,” said the agency.
The launch will get underway at 10am.
Youth Month is commemorated in South Africa to pay tribute to the youth of 1976, who paid with life and limb for the right to quality education during apartheid. Today, South Africa continues to work to increase access for youth to opportunities in education, skills development and the economy. South Africa provides free basic and higher education to learners from disadvantaged homes. – SAnews.gov.za
