Giyani-The new year will bring more joy to patients of a psychiatric hospital in Giyani, Limpopo.

The hospital was adopted by Communications Minister Faith Muthambi in 2014 with the view of transforming the health facility into the centre of hope.

On Thursday, Minister Muthambi spent New Year's eve with patients and the nursing staff, where she handed over gifts to patients bought by the funds donated by Bua Africa. The Minister also handed over a uniform to the hospital choir before ending the celebrations with cake cutting.

Speaking to patients, Minister Muthambi said one of her major deliverables in the past year has been the laying the ground work of bringing digital television to South Africa.

Last month, the Minister officially launched the digital migration programme in Kakamas and Keimoes outside Upington in the Northern Cape, where she distributed free Set Top Boxes (STBs) to qualifying beneficiaries.

Minister Muthambi told more than 250 patients that very soon they will also enjoy better quality pictures and sound when the country switch off its analog signal.

“I have brought you gifts which should make you happy as we transit into 2016.

“The implementation of this programme will stimulate economic growth and create employment through the manufacturing and installation of set top boxes. The distribution of these set top boxes will in due course spread throughout the country, and you also stand to benefit from this programme,” she said.

During her first visit at the hospital where she also led a clean-up campaign, Minister Muthambi emphasised the importance of revamping the hospital. -SAnews.gov.za
