Pretoria – The North West municipal councillor, who was arrested for allegedly raping a minor, is expected to appear in the Temba Magistrate's Court on Friday.

According to the police, a 13-year-old girl and a friend were walking back from a sports ground on Saturday when the 45-year-old councillor gave them a lift.

The councillor allegedly told the girls he needed to withdraw cash at Makapanstad but instead drove to Hammanskraal, where he allegedly withdrew money before buying the girls a meal and making a braai.

"It is alleged that after the braai, the councillor promised to take the 13-year-old minor and her friend back home to Sutelong village near Bedwang.

“While the suspect was driving, he stopped his car and ordered the victim to accompany him to the nearby bushes, where he allegedly raped her," said North West police spokesperson, Brigadier Thulane Ngubane.

Both the minor and the councillor got back into the car before the councillor allegedly drove the girls to a nearby dam, where he allegedly raped the 13-year-old girl again.

"The victim managed to escape at the dam and went home to inform her mother. The incident was reported by the girl's mother on Monday," Ngubane said.

North West Premier Thandi Modise has condemned the incident, describing it as shocking and despicable.

“The incident occurs at a time when we expect every leader and prominent male in our communities to make a call for real men to stand up to be counted against the scourge of rape, further deepening our disappointment and anger,” Modise said.

Modise commended the victim’s mother for the steps she has taken for justice to be served. – SAnews.gov.za
