Motshekga saddened by Mondeor learner stabbing

Thursday, March 14, 2019

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga has expressed shock and sadness at the death of 19-year old Kulani Mathebula, a Grade 11 learner at Mondeor High School.

Mathebula was attacked and sustained fatal stab wounds while on his way to school on Wednesday.

Law enforcement agencies are investigating the criminal act, while Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi and his team are providing much needed support to the school.

Police today announced they have arrested two more people in connection with the killing, bringing to three the number of people nabbed for the heinous crime.

The death of Mathebula follows another tragic stabbing barely a week ago of Boniface Ndlovu, from Emmanuel Secondary School in Kimberly, whose life was also cut short last week for his matric dance shoes.

“The holistic education of our learners is a societal matter, and we, as communities, parents and guardians must instil in our children the notion that violence is not the answer,” said the Minister.

Motshekga expressed concern about the high levels of violence being reported in schools. The Minister also urged communities to take back control of schools and the streets of their communities.

She extended her sincerest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased learners, as well as the school communities. – SAnews.gov.za
