Minister to meet Joburg hostel dwellers

Sunday, July 17, 2016

Pretoria - Human Settlements Minister Lindiwe Sisulu is expected to visit Mzimhlophe Female Hostel on Monday in Soweto to engage hostel dwellers and other community members.

When Minister Sisulu delivered her Budget Vote Speech earlier this year, she called for an end to hostels.

“Human Settlements would like to gradually abolish hostels in our towns and hostel dwellers, who have lived in our towns for a number of years, would qualify for a Breaking New Ground (BNG) house or the CRU [Community Residential Units] subsidy, depending on their specific circumstances,” Minister Sisulu said.

The City of Johannesburg is one of the metros to heed the call, as some of the Mzimhlophe hostel dwellers will be prioritised for housing.

The Minister will also do a walkabout and receive briefing at the construction site of the housing units.

Minister Sisulu will also participate in a clean-up campaign in and around the hostel as part of her contribution to International Nelson Mandela Day events that will be taking place throughout the country on July 18.
