Meyiwa to be laid to rest on Saturday

Pretoria - The late Bafana Bafana skipper, Senzo Meyiwa, will be buried in his home town of Umlazi in Durban on Saturday, 1 November, his club Orlando Pirates announced on Tuesday.

According to the statement released by the club on Tuesday, the provincial government of KwaZulu-Natal is finalising the status of the funeral.

A consideration was made to hold the funeral on Sunday to accommodate Mbulaeni Mulaudzi’s funeral that is being held on the same day in Muduluni village, outside Makhado in Limpopo, but the Meyiwa family’s wish was that the funeral be held on Saturday.

Orlando Pirates boss Dr Irvin Khoza visited the bereaved Meyiwa family, where he was also joined by KZN Premier Senzo Mchunu.

When asked about the visit to the Meyiwa family yesterday, Khoza said: “Senzo was like a son to me. He came to Orlando Pirates in his mid-teens. It was heart-warming to see the KwaZulu-Natal leadership put aside their busy diaries to visit the Meyiwa family.

“I left Gauteng with the strength I received from the football family, South African Football Association (Safa) and the Premier Soccer League (PSL)”.

Today the Meyiwa family will be in Johannesburg to identify Senzo’s body to prepare for his repatriation to Durban. The club said further details will be provided in due course. - SAnews.gov.za
