Mthatha - The military aircraft carrying the late former President Nelson Mandela’s body landed shortly after 13:30 at the Mthatha Airport on Saturday afternoon.

Amongst those present at the airport when the aircraft arrived were high-profile delegates from the ANC, military and police officials, family members and elders, his wife Graca Machel, former wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, his children Makaziwe, Zenani and Zindzi, President Jacob Zuma, Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe and former President Thabo Mbeki.

Security was tight at the airport leading up to the arrival.

While the C-130 carrying Madiba’s remains was initially expected to arrive in Mthatha just before 1pm, it landed shortly after 13:30 due to its late departure from the Waterkloof Air Force Base.

Madiba’s body was received with full military honours. After rituals have been conducted, a military procession will make its way through the town of Mthatha to Qunu.

Hundreds of people have gathered to line the streets along the procession route to catch a glimpse of the coffin which is draped with the South African National Flag. While the mood on the streets has been sombre, its also been celebratory and one of thankfulness for all that the man had given up in the fight for democracy.

Mourners, residents and holiday makers have been warned that there will be road closures along the route of the procession.

Upon arrival at the Mandela family farm, rituals will again be conducted and the body of Madiba will be handed to the ruling party. Following further rituals, the body will be presented to the Mandela family.

A night vigil has been planned for this evening at the Walter Sisulu University in Mthatha.
