Mbombela - Sports fans have been urged to wear cricket, netball and rugby jerseys every Friday in support of national teams participating in international tournaments this year ahead of the launch of Magnificent Fridays in Mpumalanga.

To encourage a sporting spirit, Mpumalanga MEC for Culture, Sport and Recreation Sibongile Manana will introduce the campaign to the province on Friday.

Manana will also take a walk down Paul Kruger Street in the province's capital to encourage ordinary citizens to support the Cricket World Cup, Netball World Championships and the Rugby World Cup.

"Magnificent Fridays is an initiative aimed at garnering support for the cricket, netball and rugby sides participating in World Cup tournaments this year," she said, adding that the campaign continues where Football Fridays left off during the FIFA Soccer World Cup, when people from all walks of life rallied behind Bafana Bafana and the tournament.

She said the Magnificent Fridays campaign would also be used to teach people about national symbols and the national anthem.

The first international tournament that will be the focus of Magnificent Fridays will be the Cricket World Cup in India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, which runs from February 19 to April 2.

South Africa's Proteas will play against West Indies on February 24.

The national netball side will participate in the World Championships in Singapore from July 3 to 10, and the Springboks will defend their Webb Ellis Cup in New Zealand, from September 9 to October 23.
