Pretoria - Communications Minister Faith Muthambi has congratulated community broadcaster, Tshwane TV, for acquiring broadcasting rights for the ODI and T20 cricket series between Zimbabwe and New Zealand.
“This is an important achievement for community television in South Africa. It is the first of its kind for a community-based television station without encrypted signal to be able to acquire broadcasting rights for an international sport event,” said the Minister on Tuesday.
The cricket series started this week in Zimbabwe.
The deal will see Tshwane community television broadcasting the series until 2023.
Minister Muthambi said it is encouraging to see that the rights holders are not just selling the broadcast rights to signal encrypted pay television stations only.
“I hope this will serve as encouragement for many community-based television stations out there to note that there is space to compete in the television market," said Minister Muthambi.
The Minister also congratulated SABC Radio for acquiring broadcasting rights for Bangladesh-South Africa series. - SAnews.gov.za
