Durban - The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development and Tourism will host a provincial Job and Economic Recovery Summit to devise a plan to prevent the province from descending further into an economic slump.
Themed "The Roadmap towards economic recovery", the two-day summit will take place on Thursday at the Sibaya Casino Conference Centre in Durban.
Department MEC Mike Mabuyakhulu said the summit will mark the beginning of a collective vision by the provincial government and its social partners to build productive capacity required for sustainable economic growth and job creation that can stand the test of recession.
He said the summit hopes to formulate a provincial framework for economic recovery and job retention, as well as an agreement on key economic and industrial development priorities for the province.
According to the department, the global economic situation has adversely affected the province's economy, resulting in job losses in many sectors.
The summit will be hosted by the KwaZulu-Natal Office of the Premier, the Department of the Economic Development and Tourism in partnership with COSATU, the eThekwini Municipality, and the Zululand Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Business and Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry
