Four members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) were killed in a crash on the N3 northbound in KwaZulu-Natal, at the weekend.

The members who were stationed at Natal Carbineers, a Reserve Force Unit in Pietermaritzburg, were on their way to the Boschoek training area for mission readiness.

“Of the eleven occupants in the SAMil 20 Personnel Carrier, four members died on the scene, five sustained minor injuries and were taken to St Annes Hospital in Pietermaritzburg where they received medical attention and three were discharged on Tuesday,” SANDF spokesperson Brigadier General Mafi Mgobozi said on Tuesday.

A Board of Inquiry has been set up and will determine circumstances surrounding the cause of the accident, Mgobozi said.

The Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, the Secretary for Defence Sam Gulube and the Chief of the SANDF General Solly Shoke have expressed their condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of the deceased members. They also wish a full recovery to the hospitalised members. - SAnews.gov.za
