Investigation resumes after JHB post office fire

Monday, November 2, 2009

Pretoria - Investigations into the cause of the fire that gutted the historic old post office in Rissik Street in the Johannesburg city centre are set to begin this morning.

Emergency services spokesperson Nana Radebe told BuaNews that as many as 30 fire fighters worked to extinguish the blaze, which started around 8.50pm on Sunday.

The fire was finally extinguished around 4am on Monday.

Radebe said the building, across the street from the Gauteng Legislature, was currently under construction, which made it difficult for fire fighters enter it.

"No one was injured and our fire safety offices will now visit the scene to determine the cause of the fire."

This is the second fire at the post office in recent months.

The building, which is over 100 years old, has been in a state of disrepair for several years now following incidents of vandalism.
