IEC to visit the ill, heavily pregnant

Saturday, February 5, 2011

Polokwane - The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in Limpopo will visit heavily pregnant and seriously ill people at their homes to help them register to vote today and Sunday.

Provincial electoral officer, Nkaro Mateta said: "We will provide a home visit facility for those who cannot bring themselves to voting stations due to special circumstances such as illness or pregnancy."

Voting stations countrywide will be open from 8am to 5pm on both days for new registrations, and to give those who have moved since the last elections a chance to amend their details on the voters' roll.

Mateta said all registered voters affected by the establishment of new ward boundaries should make use of the weekend to go and re-register in their new voting district.

During the voter registration weekend, Limpopo officials are hoping to register a total of 100 000 new voters.

"We've done our outmost in our voter outreach initiatives to reach out to as many potential voters as possible especially voters with little or no formal education and first time voters.

"Our strategy to reach out to the first-time voters included working with Youth Ambassadors, partnering with the Youth Agencies across the province, theatres, artists and road shows," she said.

The 2011 local government elections are expected to be held anytime between March and May and Cooperative and Traditional Affairs Minister, Sicelo Shiceka will announce the date soon.

Potential voters need a green bar coded South African Identity Document or a temporary identification certificate to register for these upcoming municipal elections.

There are pleas for another voter registration weekend, but the IEC has not indicated whether there would be another voter registration weekend, as this will depend on the outcome of this weekend.
