Pretoria - Government is on a drive to market the Office of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) Judge.
The Office of the DPCI Judge, headed by Retired Judge Essa Moosa, is mandated to conduct investigations on complaints from members of the public about the Hawks and from members of the Hawks against members of the public, including politicians and civil servants.
Speaking at an event to raise the profile of the Office of the DPCI Judge, Police Minister Nkosinathi Nhleko said the office, established in 2010, is designed to ensure that the Hawks do not exceed their mandate.
An amount of R5.5 million has been appropriated for the office of the DPCI Judge in the 2015/16 financial year. Minister Nhleko urged members of the public to make full use of this office.
The Minister said the function of the office is to receive and investigate complaints from any member of the public, who can provide evidence of a serious and unlawful infringement of his or her rights caused by an investigation by the DPCI. The office also investigates complaints from any member of the DPCI, who can provide evidence of any improper influence or interference.
Over the next few months, Minister Nhleko said there will be more initiatives to make sure the office receives the kind of marketing it deserves.
