Freedom Park lines up activities to honour Madiba

Monday, December 9, 2013

Pretoria - Freedom Park has lined up a series of activities in support of the national programme throughout the week to honour the late former President Nelson Mandela.

Located at Salvokop in the City of Tshwane, Freedom Park - a national liberation heritage monument and an icon of humanity - has been chosen as one of the official public viewing areas.

“Freedom Park and its facilities were created not only as spaces of healing the wounds of the past. [It is not only] a spiritual place, but also a platform for reflection for the memory of those, like Mandela, who contributed to our freedom.

“We call upon representatives of various interfaith groups to utilise the space to conduct interfaith prayers for tata Madiba’s family and the nation as whole during the week of mourning,” said Freedom Park Chief Executive Fana Jiyane.

One of the park’s elements, Isivivane, is the symbolic resting place for those who died fighting for freedom and liberation in South African, while the Sanctuary overlooking the outdoor amphitheatre and the eternal flame, has been dedicated as a serene environment conducive for prayers and related activities.

Freedom Park memorial activities are primarily rooted in the National Memorial Week Programme.

Tomorrow, members of the public will be able to view the Memorial Service from FNB Stadium on the big screen at the amphitheatre from 8am until 5pm.

On Thursday, there will be a special memorial service and interfaith prayers at the amphitheatre from 10 am until midday.

Entrance to the park will be free throughout the week of mourning to allow members of the public to pay their last tribute and watch memorial proceedings on the big screen. - SAnews.gov.za
