Pretoria – Ekurhuleni says on Thursday night it recorded and registered 1030 people at the Germiston City Hall and Elsburg Community Centre who have been affected by the spate of attacks on foreign nationals.
A further transmission site has been identified in Primrose and is expected to be in operation from Friday. The metro will be putting up marquees at the site to provide temporary shelter.
"We have also identified a site in Springs where, once basic amenities and lodgings are in place, we will be moving those who we have been registered," said mayoral spokesperson Zweli Dlamini in a statement.
While the situation is currently calm, Disaster and Emergency Management teams are on standby to assist people who have fallen victim to the attacks against foreign nationals.
A task team has been convened which is working around the clock to make logistical arrangements to provide relief to those who have been displaced. The task team will also be in contact with various NGOs to request humanitarian assistance.
There have been incidents of violence reported in Ramaphosa, Palm Ridge extension, Greenfields, Wattville, Actonville and Dukathole, however, they were resolved soon.
The last incident was reported at 9pm when a shack was set alight in Makause informal settlement in Germiston. – SAnews.gov.za
