Pretoria - Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital will operate normally today after a section of the roof collapsed on Thursday afternoon.

The incident happened while private construction workers were filling-in a leaking section of the roof on the sixth floor. The section caved in, causing severe damage to the floor below.

The services for the contractor have since been terminated pending a negligence investigation.

The Gauteng Department of Health confirmed that five people were injured. The injured include two construction workers, two members of the public and one hospital staff member. No fatalities have been reported.

The provincial government assured the public that the incident is confined to the main entrance of the hospital and as such, it has not affected other areas of the facility.

Alternative access points to hospital will be made available and the MEC has pleaded with the public to bear with them during this time.

“We want to assure the public that we share their concerns in terms of patient safety… The incident is confined to the main entrance of the hospital, so patients are not affected,” said Gauteng MEC for Health Dr Gwen Ramokgopa, who visited the scene on Thursday.

The MEC was accompanied by Gauteng Premier David Makhura and Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi. -
