Brakpan water safe for drinking

Pretoria - Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality has assured Brakpan residents that the water quality in the area is safe for consumption.

"The quality of tap water in the area is not compromised and meets the South African National Standard for drinking water," Mayoral Committee for Water and Energy, Aubrey Nxumalo assured residents.

This follows recent warnings on social media websites and emails circulating, saying that residents should not drink their tap water. This was after the area experienced water shortage on 9 October.

Nxumalo explained that the problem was caused by an electrical cable fault at one of the Rand Water pump stations feeding the Brakpan area.

"The reservoir subsequently ran low, causing low water pressure in the area. The cable was repaired on Sunday evening and pumping resumed at 8pm on the same day, where after the reservoir was gradually starting to fill up again.

"On Monday, the water level at the Sallies reservoir was still too low to pump to the water tower feeding the area. However, it must be emphasized that the water quality has not been compromised by this situation at all," said Nxumalo.

He added that the results from the samples taken by the Water Quality Section on 11 October, as part of their water quality monitoring process, confirmed that the water quality had not been compromised by the situation.
