Booysen's killer to be sentenced today

Wednesday, October 30, 2013

Pretoria - The Swellendam Circuit High Court will today sentence Johannes Kana, who was yesterday found guilty of the rape and murder of 17-year-old Anene Booysen.

Kana was found guilty of raping and mutilating Booysen, leaving her to die at a housing construction site in February this year.

Reacting to Tuesday’s ruling, Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Jeff Radebe commended the prosecutors and praised the courts for ensuring that victims of heinous crimes receive justice and protection from the courts.

“This clearly bolsters government's aggressive fight against sexual violence against women and children,” Radebe’s spokesperson Mthunzi Mhaga said.

Mhaga said the minister hoped that an appropriate sentence that fits the crime will be imposed.

“The minister hopes that this conviction and subsequent sentence will encourage other victims of sexual violence to report cases to law enforcement and that other offenders will be deterred.” – SAnews.gov.za
