Pretoria - The man accused of murdering Bredasdorp teenager Anene Booysen is expected to go on trial in the Swellendam Circuit High Court today.
Johannes Kana, who has been kept in custody for the past eight months, pleaded guilty of raping Booysen, but said he did not kill her.
The sheer brutality of the attack on the 17-year-old shocked the world and drew widespread outrage.
Booysen was found by a security guard at a construction site in Bredasdorp, in the Western Cape, in February.
She had been gang raped and mutilated. She died later after she managed to identify one of her alleged attackers as Jonathan Davids before passing on.
However, Davids, who confessed to being at the same pub as Booysen that night, was let off the hook shortly after the trial date was set by the State due to insufficient evidence.
Davids believes Booysen named him because she had seen him at the pub and possibly thought he could help nab her attackers.
Now, Kana is the last suspect standing. The trail is set for a month and about 52 witnesses are expected to testify. – SAnews.gov.za
