Pretoria - Absa has responded to the call from government to assist in raising money to provide relief to victims of the recent floods that have devastated various parts of the country.

On Monday, the bank said it would donate R1 million to the national government.

Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini said at the weekend that R20 million was needed to assist around 5 000 families who were still waiting for aid.

Absa has also launched a fund which will allow concerned South Africans and businesses to make contributions towards alleviating the plight of flood victims.

"The account - details of which will be released in due course - will be open for a period of a month. The amount collected will be handed over to the government. The bank will carry the charges associated with the transactions," said the bank.

Maria Ramos, Group Chief Executive at Absa, said: "With wet weather conditions set to continue over the next few days over various parts of the country, the situation could become even more dire.

"South Africans are a caring nation and we will be launching the Absa Flood Relief Fund to provide members of the public with an opportunity to assist fellow South Africans who have been impacted by these extreme weather conditions."
