Bafana players last chance to impress Parreira

Pretoria - Carlos Alberto Parreira will use today's friendly against Guatemala in Polokwane to give his players a final opportunity to impress him before he trims down the squad to 23 players for the World Cup.

FIFA set 1 June as the deadline for all 32 participating teams to submit their final 23-man squads for the show piece.

Parreira and his preliminary 29-man squad are in Limpopo where they are set to play against the Central American country at Peter Mokaba stadium this evening. Kick-off is at 8:35pm.

Parreira is expected to drop five players from his provisional squad.

The Brazilian born coach has indicated that he will go to the tournament with three goalkeepers, indicating that either Shu-Aib Walters of Maritzburg United or Rowen Fernandez of the German club, Arminia Bielefeld) will be dropped ahead of Itumeleng Khune of Kaizer Chiefs and Moeneeb Josephs of Orlando Pirates.

Midfielder Andile Jali, who has been in the US receiving medical treatment for a mild cardiovascular condition, is also likely to miss out of representing his country in the tournament.

Other players who might be dropped are Mamelodi Sundowns defender, Innocent Mdledle, Bryce Moon, Anele Ngcongca of Racing Genk, Franklin Cale of Mamelodi Sundowns, Lance Davids of Ajax, MacBeth Sibaya of Russian team, Rubin Kazan and Moroka Swallows striker, Siyabonga "Bhele" Nomvethe who might be compromised for Benni McCarthy.
