Pretoria - South African Airways has cancelled more flights to Europe and the United Kingdom as the volcanic ash in European airspace continues to hamper safe flying conditions.

Flights scheduled to depart from Johannesburg to London, Frankfurt and Munich were cancelled on Saturday as volcanic ash caused by the recent volcanic activity in Iceland continues to expand in Europe.

Flights, which were scheduled to depart from London to Johannesburg and Cape Town and from Frankfurt and Munich to Johannesburg, were also cancelled.

SAA said in a statement that airports in London, Frankfurt and Munich have been closed as a directive from European Air Traffic, which began with the closure of Heathrow International Airport in London on Thursday.

"SAA will continue monitoring conditions and resume normal operations to the three airports as soon as it is deemed safe, at this stage there is no indication as to when conditions will be safe for air traffic," SAA said, reiterating that the safety of passengers and crew is its main priority.

Affected passengers are advised to contact SAA reservations on (011) 978-1111 or 0861 606 606 or their travel agent for assistance with rebooking their flight on an alternative date or routing.

Passengers in the UK can contact the call centre on 08717221111 during operating hours from 9am to 5pm UK local time.
