The Presidency has dismissed media reports that there is a shortlist of candidates for the position of National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP).
The panel established by President Cyril Ramaphosa to assist to identify and select candidates for consideration is still busy with shortlisting.
“There is therefore no truth to the reports on shortlisted candidates,” said Presidential spokesperson Khusela Diko.
In October, the Presidency announced that the President’s advisory panel, headed by Energy Minister Jeff Radebe, is on the hunt for a new NDPP head.
The NDPP position became vacant in August after the Constitutional Court declared invalid and unconstitutional the appointment of Shaun Abrahams and the removal of his predecessor, Mxolisi Nxasana.
Applications and nominations for fit and proper South Africans, who possess legal qualifications for the position of the NDPP, were opened on 23 October and closed on 2 November 2018.
At the advisory panel’s earlier meeting, the panel decided that from 5 to 16 November 2018, shortlisting and interviews will take place.
It was also decided that from 19 to 23 November, the vetting of shortlisted candidates would take place and between 26 and 30 November 2018, the panel would do assessments and finalise the recommendations.
Dismissing the shortlist reports, Diko said the public would be informed in due course.
