Pretoria - A man, who claimed an unaccompanied bag containing 20kg of ephedrine valued at R6 million, has been intercepted at OR Tambo International Airport.

The South African Revenue Services (SARS) on Thursday said the man was captured by its Customs Officials at the airport on Wednesday.

“The interception followed collaborative efforts between SARS, airline officials and South African Police Services (SAPS).

“The bag from Dar es Salaam was scanned and found to contain four 5kg bags of a crystal-like substance that tested positively for ephedrine, a principal ingredient of crystal methamphetamine,” said the revenue service.

The man approached customs to claim the bag.

Immediately after signing for delivery, he was arrested by SAPS officers to be formally charged for drug possession. - SAnews.gov.za
