Malamulele – The official funeral service of the late Public Service and Administration Minister, Collins Chabane, is currently underway at the Salema Sports Ground.
The proceedings started at the house in the early hours of the morning and then proceeded to the Xikundu Evangelical Presbyterian Church for a prayer service.
Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa is the programme director of the funeral service which kicked off with the national anthem sung by a local choir.
A family member from the Chabane family, Ronald Chabane, then proceeded with the announcement of the death.
Chabane said the late Minister was a people's person, he was always keen to listen to people's problems.
“Mr President, your son who you've always trusted is no more. We announce it officially that he is no more. To all the Mhingas (Chabanes), your lovely son is gone. Collins is gone, we'll never see him again,” he said.
He said they have lost a man, a giant. “He had a tiny body but a big brain.”
Professor Mbhenyane Xikombiso then read the Obituary, followed by a musical item.
There was also a tribute from Chief Hosi Xikundu. The service will continue with more tributes from family members including Chabane’s son Matimba and his daughter Tsakani.
Representatives from COSATU and churches will also pay tribute to the late Minister.
This will be followed by President Jacob Zuma who is expected to deliver the eulogy.
There will be a SANDF ceremonial guard of honour as the cortege departs for the cemetery.
At the cemetery the national flag will be removed from the coffin by the military and handed over to the family.
The Minister’s funeral is an official funeral category one, which is reserved for serving Ministers, Speaker of the National Assembly, Chief Justice of the Republic of South Africa, Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces and Premiers of provinces.
His official memorial service was held on Thursday at the Tshwane Events Centre, where thousands of mourners came to pay their respects.
