The month of July is observed in South Africa as Mandela Month. Every year on 18 July, South Africa and the world honour the life and legacy of former President Nelson Mandela. The day, which coincides with Madiba's birthday, was officially proclaimed Nelson Mandela International Day by the United Nations General Assembly through Resolution 64/13, adopted on 10 November 2009, in recognition of his extraordinary contribution to the culture of peace, reconciliation, human rights and the promotion of social justice.

This year, South Africa commemorates two defining milestones in our democratic journey: the 50th anniversary of the Soweto Uprising of 16 June 1976 and the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution.

Each year, World Oceans Day provides an opportunity to reflect on humanity's relationship with the sea. This year, the theme, "Reimagine: Beyond the world we know, a new relationship with our ocean", challenges us to think differently about the future we wish to create.

Lenacapavir is a gamechanger in the field of global health, signifying a shift from HIV prevention that requires a daily routine to a long-acting and highly effective form of protection. Lenacapavir is expected to support government’s efforts to reduce and ultimately prevent new HIV infections in South Africa, advancing the country's goal of achieving zero new HIV infections and ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has called on government to work with all South Africans to plant one billion trees over the coming years. In support of the President’s vision, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) has launched an ambitious campaign to plant 10 million trees in a single day on Heritage Day, 24 September 2026.

Our 2026/27 Budget Vote – tabled recently in Parliament - is about improving people's lives, creating opportunities, protecting livelihoods and building a more sustainable future for all South Africans.

The lengthy delays between the planning of vital infrastructure and the commencement of construction are set to be significantly reduced. As South Africa marks Youth Month in June, we are reminded that the future of the country depends on how effectively the nation supports, empower and invest in young people today.

For generations, this sacred rite of passage has marked the transition from childhood to adulthood, shaping identity, instilling discipline and reinforcing the cultural fabric of communities across the country.

Those who have had the opportunity to carefully study South Africa’s road to democracy would most likely agree with the assertion that our democracy is a special product of intangible solidarity.

Every year on 24 March, South Africa joins the global community in commemorating World Tuberculosis (TB) Day, a day that calls for reflection and recommitment to ending one of the world’s most severe, yet curable diseases.
