Metro cops protest march hits Joburg city centre

Monday, February 2, 2009

Johannesburg - Over 3 000 Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers will be marching through the Johannesburg city centre on Monday.

"The march starts at 10am and will probably be finished by 14:30pm," Metro Police spokesperson Wayne Minnaar told BuaNews.

"The protest march will start on Beyers Naude Square and the officers will then march down President Street and then Rissik street, and then go on to the Metro Centre in Braamfontein."

He highlighted that there will be some metro police on duty, who will be accompanying the march and redirecting traffic as and when necessary.

The metro police officers are protesting over alleged corruption within their departments and the lack of disciplinary action taken against senior managers.

Licensing departments throughout the city will not be in operation on Monday, the Metro Police have confirmed.

Monday's march is expected to be the first of several this week.
