Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma has expressed condolences to the President of Chile, Michelle Bachelet, after an earthquake struck the country on Saturday.

More than 300 people were killed and hundreds reported missing after the 8.8 magnitude quake, the strongest to hit the South American nation since 1960.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to those who have been affected by the earthquake, either emotionally and psychologically or through the loss of life of loved ones or destroyed infrastructure," said Zuma.

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation said it has not been informed of any South African citizens who may have been affected by the earthquake.

The department urged South Africans who may have family members in Chile to contact their operations centre at 012 351 1000.

The department said it will continue to monitor the situation in Chile.
