Torres to show Iraq no mercy during Confeds match

Wednesday, June 17, 2009

Pretoria - Spanish sensational striker, Fernando Torres, poses the greatest threat to Asian champions Iraq, in today's much anticipated FIFA Confederations Cup match.

The two national teams will battle it out at the Vodacom Park Stadium in Bloemfontein at 4pm, during the second match of the Confederations Cup Group A.

The European champions, who are leading Group A with three points and five goals, will continue to strengthen their unbeaten record of 33 games. A win or a draw would also stretch their unbeaten run to 34 games.

Torres is currently the Confederations Cup top goal scorer after he scored a hat-trick during his national team's opening match of the eight nation's tournament against New Zealand in Rustenburg last Sunday.

Currently, there is a sweepstake going on among the strikers as to who will end the tournament as top scorer.

Following Torres, is the Egypt's young striker, Mohamed Zidan, and Brazilian top striker Kaka with two goals each.

The Liverpool striker scored his three goals in the first 17 minutes through beating the All Whites goalkeeper with a brilliant shot, header and a redirected ball.

Together with his attacking striker, David Villa, the two are expected to score more goals if the Iraq defence cannot improve their performance by closing down the brilliant combination of the two Spanish strikers.

A goalless draw against the host, South Africa, last Sunday was a great result for Iraq, whose chances to qualify for the semi-finals are slim.

Later in the evening, host South Africa, which is also under great pressure to qualify to the next stage of the tournament, take on New Zealand at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium at 8:30pm.

In order for Bafana Bafana to win today's game, head coach Joel Santana needs to rest one of his defence midfielders, Benson Mhlongo or Macbeth Sibaya.
