Taung - A team has been deployed to assess the damage following a storm which left over 500 people without shelter last Friday.

A total of 50 mud houses, 55 formal dwellings, a school and the electricity and communication network in the Longaneng, Molelema and Morokweng villages were extensively damaged by a thunderstorm.

The damage was provisionally estimated at over R2 million.

According to a statement by the North West Department of Developmental Local Government and Housing, North West MEC for Developmental Local Government and Housing, Howard Yawa has deployed the technical team to conduct an "on the ground assessment of the disaster".

The team will visit the area on Wednesday and finalise recommendations on the required intervention to alleviate the situation of the families that were left destitute by the disaster.

So far, salvage sheets for temporary roofing and mattresses, blankets, basic food parcels have been distributed to all of the 105 affected families by the Joint Operation Centre established by Greater Taung Local Municipality.

Cottage tents have also provided temporary accommodation.

The local relief efforts are supported by Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality and the Provincial Disaster Management Centres.

Tragically, the provincial department had just two weeks before completed a housing project rebuilding 2000 houses which were destroyed in a storm in 2006.
