Thursday, May 17, 2012

Pretoria - South Africa will today join the international community in celebrating World Telecommunications and Information Society Day, and government has a host of festivities lined up to mark the occasion.

Celebrations will take place under the theme "Women and Girls in ICT".

Briefing media after an ordinary meeting of Cabinet, spokesperson Jimmy Manyi on Thursday noted there will be a host of activities in the Northern Cape from 17 - 20 May, which will acknowledge the role of women in the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector. The activities will also encourage more women to get involved in this sector.

"The purpose of this conference is to profile, celebrate, acknowledge and recognise the achievements of the ICT [sector] towards socio-economic development. Furthermore, build interest towards this industry as a career of choice and its innovations which have shaped communications," he said.

It will also serve as a precursor for the Women in ICT Conference in November 2012.
