IBSA vows to fight for the poor

Pretoria - India, Brazil and South Africa (IBSA) have committed to promote the objectives of the poor nations in the UN Security Council and make it more transparent.

Following India and South Africa's election on Tuesday as non-permanent members of the council, Permanent Representatives of the three countries reiterated a call to urgently expand the council in both its permanent and non-permanent categories.

In this regard, IBSA reiterated the urgent need for the UN to be reformed to become more representative and reflective of the needs and priorities of developing countries.

"This will make the UNSC more broadly representative, efficient and transparent, and would also enhance its effectiveness and legitimacy, as well as the implementation of its decisions," they said.

The three countries also stressed their firm commitment to collaborate in the council, with the aim of making it more responsive and transparent in the execution of its mandate.

IBSA committed to enhance cooperation in the Security Council on all priority agenda items.

One such priority area, they said, would be to promote and enhance the Security Council's cooperation with regional organisations, particularly the African Union's Peace and Security Council.

India and South Africa will begin a two-year term in January 2011, while Brazil began a similar term this year.

IBSA is seen as a trilateral developmental initiative to strengthen cooperation, policy dialogue and coordination among these major emerging countries.
