Pretoria - The number of people who have flocked to the 10 FIFA Fan Fests since the World Cup kicked off in South Africa, has surpassed the two million mark, FIFA said.
Durban remained the most popular of all the Fan Fests with attendance figures exceeding 500 000 since the start of the tournament. On Saturday, more than 80 000 people watched the match between Brazil and the Netherlands at the Durban Fan Fest while 41 917 and 20 732 turned out in Cape Town and Soweto respectively.
Up to 306 500 people rocked the Fan Fest in Germany taking attendance there past the one million mark and taking the total for the tournament worldwide to 4 684 948.
Organising Committee CEO Danny Jordaan described the figures as encouraging and called on South Africans to continue visiting the Fan Fests as the tournament reaches its climax.
"There are only four matches left until the end of the World Cup. If you have not done so already, now is your opportunity to visit the Fan Fests and experience the unique atmosphere which they have. Go out and meet new friends and be a part of the worldwide World Cup celebration," Jordaan said.
Organisers have lined up a variety of entertainment to keep fans happy before and after matches. Performers such as Prime Circle K'Naan, Flash Republic, Loyiso, Thandiswa Mazwai and Liquid Deep will join a host of others at the various parties which have been planned for this week.
