Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma has wished the Indian community in South Africa well as millions of Hindus celebrate the Festival of Lights, Diwali, today.

"We wish the members of the Indian community and others embracing this day a joyous occasion. May you use this opportunity to reconnect with family and friends and celebrate the Festival of Lights. Our best wishes go out to all of you," he said in a statement.

"During this auspicious time we wish the Hindu, Tamil, Gujerati and other communities celebrating this occasion a Happy Diwali and a prosperous New Year," he said, adding that Diwali celebrates the triumph of good over evil, the lawful over the illicit, and that which is right over that which is wrong.

"May the radiance of the myriad lamps of Diwali illuminate the deepest recesses of our hearts and minds. Let us use this occasion to reflect on our actions as we work together to build a South Africa that is prosperous for all," said the President.
