Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma has wished former President FW de Klerk a speedy recovery following his admission to hospital.

"We wish the former President well during this difficult time. Let us keep him and his family in our thoughts and prayers," President Zuma said in a statement on Tuesday.

De Klerk was reportedly due to undergo a procedure to install a pacemaker. He was expected to be discharged from hospital within 24 hours.

He received the Nobel Peace Prize together with Nelson Mandela in 1993 for overseeing South Africa's transition to democracy.

De Klerk had suspended his visit to Europe on Saturday due to former President Nelson Mandela’s medical condition.  – SAnews.gov.za
