Zuma sends condolences on passing of Prof Mzamane

Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma has conveyed his condolences on the passing of Professor Mbulelo Vizikhungo Mzamane.

The former Vice Chancellor of the University of Fort Hare was a renowned intellectual and one of the country's foremost pioneers of African literature.

"On behalf of government and the people of South Africa, we would like to convey our deepest condolences to his family and the entire academic community. May his soul rest in peace," said President Zuma.

Mzamane was the first post-apartheid Vice Chancellor and Rector at Fort Hare. He has taught English Studies, Comparative Literature and African Studies at universities in Southern Africa, West Africa, Europe, the US, and Australia. 

He was appointed by former Presidents Nelson Mandela and Thabo Mbeki to serve on the SABC Board and the Heraldry Council. He was for eight years founder chairman of the Institute for the Advancement of Journalism, the founding patron of the Freedom of Expression Institute, and the founding director of the Book Development Council of Africa. – SAnews.gov.za
