Zuma mulls arms deal probe extension

Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma is considering a request to extend the commission of inquiry into the multibillion rand arms deal.

“President Jacob Zuma has received and is considering a request to extend by 12 months, the Commission of Inquiry into Allegations of Fraud, Corruption, Impropriety or Irregularity in the Strategic Defence Procurement Package,” the Presidency said on Wednesday.

The term of the commission is due to expire in November 2013. The commission's public hearings are due to start next week, and are planned to run into January.

The commission, which is probing the R70 billion arms procurement deal, will hold public hearings from August 5 until January 31 at the council chambers of the Sammy Marks Conference Centre in Pretoria. – SAnews.gov.za
