Thursday, December 10, 2009

Free State - President Jacob Zuma will today mark the closing of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children Campaign.

Under the theme, Don't Look Away Act Against Abuse, President Zuma will commemorate the decade old campaign by addressing a gathering at the University of the Free State.

The campaign kicked-off on 25 November with the lighting of the Torch of Peace as well as a stakeholder summit among other things.

During the campaign, South Africans were urged to break the silence of violence against women and children. Although the country has one of the best constitutions in the world, women and children still fall victim to violence and abuse.

Women, Children and People Living with Disabilities Minister, Noluthando Mayende-Sibiya, Transport Minister Sbu Ndebele as well as Education Minister Angie Motshega will also attend the event.

As part of the event, two houses will be handed over to families in Qwa-Qwa, while two tombstones will also be unveiled.

The tombstones are of two children who were buried alive by a woman's boyfriend in the area.
