Pretoria - Home Affairs Minister Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma has called on the youth to apply for identity documents (IDs) as part of the ongoing National Population Registration Campaign (NPR).
Speaking ahead of the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the June 16 uprising in 1976, Dlamini Zuma said each South African citizen over the age of 16 was entitled to an ID, which enables them to access services provided by government.
"You are also able to access other opportunities including, among others, the ability to open a bank account and apply for further education opportunities.
"It is with this in mind that the department has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Department of Education to enable our mobile offices to visit schools and help those who are eligible to apply for IDs," Dlamini-Zuma said on Sunday.
To ensure that young people who want to apply for their IDs have the necessary support, the department will on Thursday send out a number of mobile units across the country to venues where Youth Day will be commemorated.
Four mobile units will be deployed at the main national commemoration venue at Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg.
"Young people across the country are urged to take advantage of these opportunities so that indeed, you may have access to an ID, which we consider to be a passport to a better life," said Dlamini Zuma.
