The Department of Trade and Industry’s (dti) Workplace Challenge’s progamme celebrations will today draw to a close in the Northern Cape.
The celebrations, which will be held at the Sol Plaatjie Hall in Kimberley, will bring to culmination year-long celebrations of the 20-year programme.
The programme is a joint initiative of the dti and National Economic Development Labour Council (Nedlac) that is implemented on a 24-month period with the aim to encouraging and supporting negotiated workplace change to improve productivity and job creation.
Held across the country under the theme “Ensuring Sustainability for South African Enterprises” saw the dti and Productivity South Africa (Productivity SA) holding events throughout the country to garner support for the uptake of the programme by South Africa companies.
The programme operates in the form of clusters, facilitated by Productivity SA.
“Kimberley will be the last stop of our year-long campaign where we have been consistently calling upon to manufacturing companies to enrol in the two-year Workplace Challenge Programme (WPC) to ensure a sustained improvement in their productivity and competitiveness,” said Minister Rob Davies ahead of the celebrations.
In addition, the department will also share information with Black Industrialist beneficiaries in the Northern Cape on best practices, ways to expand their businesses, and also to assist in their production processes among others.
Productivity SA Chief Executive Officer Mothunye Mothiba said the WPC is critical for the creation and sustainability of jobs in the country.
“The programme is well-placed to foster economic growth in South Africa. Since 1998, the programme has helped more than 400 companies, employing more than 70 000 people,” said Mothiba.
