Pretoria – The South African Police Service (saps) says officials at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg are working tirelessly to detect and deal with drug trafficking.

“… drug mules continue to attempt to smuggle drugs through this port of entry, compelling authorities at the airport to remain vigilant at all times. Drug peddlers are again warned that the consequences of dealing in drugs are devastating and security officials will not allow their attempts to smuggle drugs in or out of South Africa to continue unabated,” said police spokesperson Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo on Sunday.

This comes as the team at OR Tambo arrested a South African woman on Sunday morning after she allegedly tried to smuggle drugs into the country.

Members of the customs and excise unit were conducting routine checks when they apparently discovered that the 47-year-old woman was attempting to smuggle nearly R10 million worth of crystal meth in her luggage.

She had arrived at the airport from Accra, Ghana on a South African Airways flight at 6:20am.

Naidoo said the suspect will appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday on a charge of dealing in drugs. – SAnews.gov.za
