Woman arrested for murdering her baby

Pretoria – The Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Fanie Masemola on Sunday expressed shock and horror at the murder of a 20-month old toddler at Mbekwana village, Letsitele, just outside Tzaneen.

The body of the baby girl was found by the police in a pit toilet after she was allegedly strangled by her 20-year-old mother.

On Thursday evening, police were alerted by community members after hearing hysterical screams of a baby from the toilet.

Unfortunately, by the time the police arrived and rescued the girl from the stinking, cold toilet pit, the baby was already dead.

It is believed the unemployed mother of two allegedly strangled her 20-month old baby girl, thinking that she was dead, threw her in a toilet. She was arrested immediately and will appear in court on a charge of murder.

“I have spoken to the investigating team that this case be given priority. As the police we strongly condemn crimes against women and children. Whatever circumstance might have led her to allegedly kill her own child is inexcusable.

“Government and other non-governmental associates have enough resources to assist when in need of assistance but she chose the otherwise. I and the entire provincial management send our most deepest and heartfelt condolences to the families who have been affected by this tragedy,” said Masemola. – SAnews.gov.za
