Waterkloof Four released on parole

Tuesday, February 11, 2014

Pretoria - The four men known as the Waterkloof Four have been released on parole.

Frederick Tiedt, Gert van Schalkwyk, Christopher Becker and Friekie du Preez were sentenced to 12 years in prison for the 2001 murder of a homeless man in Waterkloof. They benefited from the President's Special Remission of Sentence of six months.

Today, the four were placed on parole after signing and receiving a brief orientation on their parole conditions at the Pretoria Community Corrections Office at the Poyntons Building.

Tiedt and Van Schalkwyk served their sentences in Zonderwater, and Becker and Du Preez were in Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre in Pretoria.

They were considered by the Correctional Supervision and Parole Boards of the two centres, and granted parole as they completed half of their sentences, as required by the Correctional Services Act.

Their parole took effect on 11 February 2014.

They have been given strict parole conditions that include regular reporting to the Kgosi Mampuru Community Corrections Office in Pretoria and their sentences will expire in 2019.

Correctional Services said the four were part of about 64 offenders that get placed on parole on a daily basis.
