Pretoria - Water has been restored to Mothutlung in the North West, where residents had taken to the streets to vent their frustration over having no water.

MEC for Local Government and Traditional Affairs in the province, Manketsi Tlhape, visited the area on Thursday to confirm water restoration in the area following protests this week.

Tlhape met with a delegation from Madibeng Local Municipality before visiting families of the three protesters -- Osiah Nkalane Rahube, Michael Stevens Tshele and Lerato Theodore Seema, who were killed during the protests.

Tlhape was accompanied by the Chief Whip and other Members of the Mayoral Committee of Madibeng.

On Wednesday, Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa called on the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) to speed up the investigation into the deaths in the protests.

Tlhape also confirmed that the municipality, together with the North West Provincial Government, will work hand in hand with the bereaved families. Government has also provided basic necessities to assist with the burial arrangements.

A memorial service will take place today at the Mothutlung community hall from 10am.

One of the deceased will be buried on Saturday and the other two will be buried on Sunday. - SAnews.gov.za
