Water dept attending to payment of trainees

Thursday, May 3, 2018

The Department of Water and Sanitation has committed to fast track payments of stipends to the War on Leaks (WOL) trainees.

The department said that the delay was caused by an interruption in the transfer of funds to Rand Water as the implementing agent of the programme.

“The situation is being corrected as we speak and Rand Water will effect these payments urgently. The department apologises to the trainees for the delay in payments,” the department said in a statement.

The War on Leaks Programme is a flagship programme of government aimed at mobilising and training 15 000 young people to become water agents, artisans and plumbers.

South Africa loses R7 billion worth of water annually to leaks and this is the loss that government seeks to curb through the programme.

The programme is a national programme with a higher intake of learners in the areas and municipalities with the highest water losses and leaks.

The programmes is an integrated part of government’s efforts to promote water savings and preventing losses.

Rand Water and the Energy and Water Sector Education and Training Authority (EWSETA) were appointed as the implementing agents of the WOL project on behalf of the department. - SAnews.gov.za
