Voters' roll officially closed

Friday, March 11, 2011

Pretoria - The voters' roll is now officially closed for the 18 May local government elections.

This effectively means that no new voter registration can take place and voters' details cannot be amended. Only individuals who were registered on the voters' roll by 5pm, on Thursday, 10 March will be eligible to vote in the upcoming elections.

This comes after acting Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister, Nathi Mthethwa, proclaimed the voting date on Thursday afternoon.

The voters' roll closes for any given election on the day the election date is proclaimed in the government gazette.

The voters' roll helps the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) plan an election and identifies fraud as it shows how many voters live in a specific voting district.

In terms of section 24(2) of the Local Government: Structures Act, the Cooperative Governance Minister, after consulting the IEC, must, by notice in the government gazette, call and set a date for an election of all municipal councils.

The Election Date was announced last Thursday by Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe and it was confirmed by publication of that date in the government gazette today.
